Homemade Whole Wheat Flour
by Joey Mornin
It’s pretty simple: you start with some wheat, put it through a grinder, and collect the flour in a bowl. I used the grain mill attachment for the Kitchen Aid mixer.
I used this flour in a delicious loaf of banana bread.

one word: AMAZING!
This is so cool! Haha..the geeky side of me is showing
Love the idea, but I have never heard of a grain mill attachment for an electric mixer (I have the rival brand to yours). Would you be kind enough to post a photo of what it looks like on the machine, so I know what to look for in the kitchen stores?
Also, for those with no fancy gadgets in their kitchen, what do you suggest they use to make their own flour? I’m thinkin’ mortar & pestle ….
@PrimordialSoup:
I’ll do you one better–here’s a video about the grain mill attachment from KitchenAid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaC5Dp1atVU
There are several other fancy gadgets you could use to grind the wheat. You can get a dedicated grain mill, for instance, and I’ve heard a normal food processor works well.
For the gadgetless, a mortar and pestle might work, but it’d be a lot of work… I’d probably try a blender or a (clean) coffee grinder first.
Thanks Joey. This is my discovery of the day; I think I want one!
I’m just thinking of all those times when I came up 1/2 cup short of a particular flour in the middle of a recipe, and all along I could have ground any grain in my pantry to make up the difference!
The KGMA is pretty pricey: $149.99(http://www.shopkitchenaid.com/product_detail.asp?HDR=search&T1=KTA+KGMA).
I wonder if it’s cheaper to grind your own flour from organic ingredients than to buy a similar premium brand. Looks like I’m experimenting this weekend! Thanks for the heads up!
